That is usually fine! The reason our bushings are 5mm is that this is the most versatile hole size for cabinet hardware and interior boring. The majority of cabinet hardware manufacturers recommend a 3/16” bit for a standard #8 hardware screw. The 5mm drill is .009” larger than 3/16” or three human hairs larger. Each of these drill diameters will be noticeably larger than #8 screw, but for good reason. Often you will find the slightest variations in panel width, door squareness or un-true hardware. This minimal increased hole diameter then allows for the finest adjustment to make the handle symmetrical with the opposite door or line up a handle exactly parallel on a drawer front.

What’s great about the 5mm bit, is that you can then use the same jig and drill bit for shelf pins, hinge plates, drawer slides, etc. This minimal increase in size opens up the tool to extreme versatility at the cost of something not visible to the human eye. That being said, if you happen to have custom hardware that is extremely thin, you may consider using the tool to mark hole location and drill with a smaller bit.  We also offer various bushing sizes to replace your bushings to a smaller or even larger diameter if you have these custom hardware types come up frequently.

Hardware Jigs - Questions

The TP-1934 is the core unit of our cabinet hardware installation jig product line. This tool comes with everything you need to install knobs and handles up to 12” center to center. It comes in a hard plastic case with instructions and a 5mm drill bit.

The TP-1935 includes everything that comes in the TP-1934 with the addition of oversized hardware/line boring extension bars and an extended ruler attachment. The oversized hardware/line boring extension bars allow you to drill holes for handles up to 38” center to center, as well as shelf pins on site. The extended ruler attachment enables you to install handles and knobs on tall cabinet doors and oversized drawer fronts without having to mark center on each one. We also add a stop collar and Allen wrench for the drill bit to this kit.

Our bushings are 5mm and are made from case-hardened steel.

Please contact us directly at here or 760-279-3033 with your name and preferred ship to address and we will send you a replacement.

5mm is the industry standard but we do offer several other sizes for the jig’s bushings besides 5mm. Other hole sizes offered are ¼”, 11/64”, and 4mm. Please contact us directly at 760-279-3033 and we will happily process a custom order for you over the phone.

Our Sliding Drill Guide (TP-SDG) bushings are 1/2” deep and our T-square bushing is ¼” deep.

This way you can keep all the smaller attachments and do not have to pay full retail pricing for another kit. You should still treat the install like you would prior to having the jig regarding blowout and chipping. There are applications where we recommend using a backing device like a block of wood to minimize splintering when the drill releases out of the back of the door.

The bushings normally used on drawer fronts are 1/2” long which gives guidance for precise placement of the holes, just be sure to hold the jig so that it’s resting on the top stop against the top of the drawer.

If you have a lot of cabinets to drill in this style, it might make sense to tape a shim to the back of the jig to let you rest the bottom of the jig against the face of the drawer front.

Either way, go carefully and you’ll have no issues, the methods above are used by thousands of installers daily and work well. With that said, we will look to offer some adhesive shims in the future; it’s not necessary, just more convenient.

Over the years, many! Changes to the jig include a larger top stop, more durable thumb screws, a redesigned end stop, and extending bottom rail of the T-square by approx. 1”. We now also laser etch the numbers into the jig, where before we screen printed them over the aluminum T-square. Most recently, the tool has started shipping in a hard-plastic case instead of a cardboard box.

Light/Wire Jigs - Questions

The TP-PLJ comes with 2-1/4” and 2-1/8” Forstner bits, which will accommodate approximately 90% of the puck lights on the market. We recommend Richelieu, Hafele, or Tresco puck lights.

Unfortunately, using this tool requires that you drill everything for the puck lights before the cabinets are hung.
